Stage: File Validation and Viewer Integration · Editable example · Storage ID: gaussian-splatting-step-10
Goals and learning outcomes
- Distinguish PLY from GS data.
- Validate the header contract.
Prerequisites
Continue using the output and records from Unit 9. Before the Checking PLY Headers experiment, preserve the previous inputs and reference outputs.
Key concepts and explanations
Container
PLY can contain many kinds of point and face attributes. Do not assume GS parameters are present based on the file extension alone.
Attribute contract
Training code may use different storage conventions for scale, rotation, and color. Declare supported field names and encodings as the parser's contract.
Practice setup
First check the execution scope guidance on the example screen. The following describes the environment needed to extend the assignment in a separate project. This is a document-guided exercise in a separate local project. Use only small data you create or local files whose usage permission you have checked. The existing preview is a CPU teaching viewer for .splat/ASCII GS PLY files of at most 1 MiB and 512 items; it is not a Spark GPU renderer.
The linked example is a starting point. It does not implement every task below. Complete work beyond its supported scope in a separate project.
Practice tasks
- In plyHeader.js, implement reading format, element, and property from ASCII headers.
- Create small string fixtures: a position-only PLY and one with the specified GS attributes.
- Reject missing required attributes, binary format, and excessive vertex counts as distinct errors.
Variables to observe
| Variable | Baseline | Change | Expected change / hypothesis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attribute set | Position and required GS attributes | Keep only position x/y/z | Expect the input to be identified as a point cloud and rejected for GS loading. |
Predictions in this table are not measured results. Change one condition at a time and record why the actual result differs.
Completion criteria
- The three error types produce different messages.
- Reject inputs whose actual row count differs from the header's vertex count.
Self-check
- Can values have different meanings even when PLY headers are identical?
- Why is automatically reading unsupported binary PLY risky?
